The work 'Hombre del Mar' (Man of the Sea) was the first sculpture to be erected on a public street in the city. With the remodelling of the Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio, the monument was moved a few metres from its original location to integrate, next to the Mediterranean, into the new urban landscape.
The idea of a monument to the 'Man of the Sea' in Torrevieja arose in 1972, and a competition was held to present different sketches.
This sculpture was sculpted by the Catalan Josep Ricart i Maimir and inaugurated on 10 May 1975.
It is a very important symbol for the city of Torrevieja to be a tribute to man, its relationship with the sea and fishing tradition.
